About the test, you need to know
The test will have two dialogues which are pre-recorded and given to you through the recorder. You will have to listen to the recordings of alternative segments of a conversation between an English speaker and a language other than English speaker. The CCL test will access the ability of the candidate to intercept the information given (in English) to LOTE with a high level of accuracy and without any discrepancy.
Each dialogue is of approximately 300 words, nearly half in English and in LOTE. These dialogues are again divided into different segments each consisting of 35 words approximately.
You need an overall score of 63 marks or more in the CCL Assessment Test with a minimum of 29 out of 45 marks in each dialogue in order to achieve 5 points. The duration of the test will be from 20 to 30 minutes.
Reasons for failure in NAATI CCL Tests
Why candidates fail NAATI CCL Tests? And how to make sure you pass?
Are you thinking about taking a NAATI CCL test? Or have you taken one? Here’s what you need to know about the reasons of NAATI CCL test fails, and what things you should consider to pass it.
What is the NAATI CCL Test?
If you are looking for benefits in your Australia Permanent Residency goals, you are eligible to claim 5 points under Credentialed Community Language (CCL) points at the Paraprofessional level or above, upon successful accreditation from NAATI.
National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters – NAATI recently introduced a Credentialed Community Language (CCL) Test that gives 5 points to international students for their point-based GSM Visa. CCL test determines a candidate’s ability to convey to the meaning of a conversion from the English language to LOTE (Language Other Than English) and vice versa.
In this test, you are required to interpret two dialogues that are conveyed to you via a recorded material. These dialogues include alternating segments of a conversation between an English speaker and a speaker speaking Language Other Than English (LOTE). You are required to infer the segments from English to LOTE and vice versa.
How are CCL tests marked?
The results of each test are determined by two markers, and wide discrepancies are resolved by a third marker. The tests are marked based on acceptable responses, not ideal solutions or what the examiners would have done. There is a strong emphasis on accuracy, to ensure that the content and intent is faithfully conveyed. The quality of language is mainly viewed in terms of how well it contributes to accuracy.
What is the reason for CCL Test failure?
Due to the superficial consensus created about cracking the CCL test with just some tricks and ideas, most of the candidates follow the online videos and its content blindly without any intent to use logic. However, most of us don’t understand that the NAATI CCL Test examines candidates’ accuracy, language quality, and speech delivery. Hence, there are very few corners one can use tricks to manipulate marking. NAATI CCL is vastly different from PTE in terms of its test delivery as well as marking. It is very difficult to pass the CCL test with limited vocabularies and speaking skills. Only practicing some audios and predesigned templates as in PTE is not going to help in cracking the CCL test, as the test setting and examination process is totally different as well as the aspects of language use and scenario are dissimilar.
There are some particularly common reasons to fail the NAATI CCL tests. The most common one is due to the lack of preparation for the test. Some only take the test to try to gain points for Australia Migration while most just assume that some degree of bilingualism is all that is needed.
During translation, lack of expertise in the individual’s second language is one of the main reasons for failure. Candidates imprudently trying to translate into their second language often results in their inability to express complex ideas. Likewise, misunderstanding the source text also results a failure during translation. Some people also have problems with technique, either translating over-literally or, less commonly, using unnecessary paraphrasing.
In the interpreting test, many candidates just don’t have sufficient listening skill and memory power and rely too much on notes. A lack of skills in ‘rapid transfer’ of meaning from one language to the other is also common. Insufficient proficiency in secondary language often leads to the misconception (when working from the second language to the first language) and difficulty expressing complex ideas (when working from first language to the second language). Limited vocabularies is another problem, especially in specialized medical and legal registers.
What should you do if you’re planning to take the NAATI test?
One of the things you should never neglect is preparation. If you want to pass the test, preparation is the key. Start preparing for the test as early as possible and get as much practice as you can. Do a lot of the practice tests available at NAATI and you can take NAATI CCL preparation courses if available. Increase your proficiency in your second language and develop high exposure to a broad range of fields in both languages. Improve your vocabulary pool and language delivery skill.

Be confident in yourself and give the test wisely.
